Working with Brenna Doering, LMHC

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming — especially when you've been burned by therapy experiences in the past. I offer a complimentary consultation as a way to see if my style resonates with you, but it’s natural to give it a few sessions to really get a sense of if this work is what you’re looking for. Many folks feel it’s a right fit when they feel understood, supported (even when challenged), and like they don’t need to explain every aspect of their experience. Fit is such a personal choice, though, and I’m happy to help navigate any questions you may have about your specific needs.
In general, I tend to thrive working with high-achieving, deeply self-aware individuals who are exhausted in ways they can’t fully explain. Many identify as neurodivergent (or suspect they might be), have complex family dynamics, or carry the weight of being first-gen, queer, or both — in a world that wasn't really built with them in mind. I work best with people who want a therapist to keep it real with them and who is genuinely invested in their growth. If that sounds like what you’ve been looking for, I’d love to meet you. First — that's worth naming, because it takes real courage to try again when therapy hasn't worked for you in the past. Many of my clients come to me after experiences where they felt like they had to educate their therapist, got generic advice that didn't resonate with them, or left sessions feeling like they’ve just scratched the surface of their problem, but not sure how to actually go deeper. But you don’t need therapy that reinforces the belief that you’re “too much.”
My approach is direct, relatable, and genuinely curious about your specific experience. I'm not going to hand you a worksheet and call it a day. I want to understand the patterns underneath what's bringing you in — the family dynamics, the identity pieces, the ways your brain works — and I'll say the things out loud that maybe no one has said to you before. My clients often tell me things like "I've never thought about it that way" or "I didn't know that was an AuDHD thing." That's the goal.I also want to be honest with you: good therapy is still going to be uncomfortable sometimes. But there's a difference between the discomfort of change and the discomfort of feeling unseen or unheard. I'm committed to the former — and I'll always make space to check in on how our work is landing for you.

Starting therapy can bring up a lot — excitement, nervousness, maybe some skepticism. All of that is okay here. We’ll take everything at your pace and tailor our work to what you’re needing and when, recognizing that may change over time.
Our first session is really about getting to know each other. I'll want to hear what's bringing you in, what's felt hard lately, and a bit about your history: your family, your experiences, the patterns you've started to notice in yourself. You don't need to have it all figured out when you first arrive. Just come with an open mind and we’ll take it from there.
Over time, we’ll build goals and a plan to help you understand yourself more deeply: where your beliefs come from, what your nervous system has been trying to protect you from, and how to start relating to yourself and others in ways that actually feel good to you. While I can’t promise an exact timeline for growth, I’ve seen clients shift in ways they genuinely didn’t know were possible. I believe my job as a therapist is to help you recognize your signs of progress, even when you haven’t felt them just yet.
EMDR therapy is central to my work with clients and will be incorporated when you’re ready. I’ll always work with you to make sure our sessions feel safe and supportive, and invite you to bring whatever creature comforts help you with that: fidgets, a favorite blanket, a snack or drink. We’ll meet virtually so you can dial in from anywhere in Florida.
How I Work with Clients
-
My work is rooted in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which I use as a primary tool for processing trauma, shifting core negative beliefs, and helping your nervous system finally release what it's been holding onto. If you're curious about what EMDR is and whether it might be right for you, I go into much more detail on my EMDR page.
Beyond EMDR, my approach is integrative and shaped around your specific experience. I weave in relational work — exploring how your early relationships and family dynamics have shaped the way you move through the world — alongside psychoeducation around neurodivergence and nervous system responses. I also bring a culturally informed lens to everything we do, so your identity — whether that's being first-gen, Latinx, queer, or neurodivergent — isn't an afterthought in our work, it's central to it.
I'm also genuinely collaborative and direct. I'll offer reflections, name things I'm noticing, and share what I'm thinking while always making space for you to push back, redirect, or say "that doesn't land for me." Therapy works best when it's a real conversation, not a one-way street, and I believe you are the expert on your experience and hold innate wisdom around what you need.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I promise it sounds more clinical than it actually feels in practice!
At its core, EMDR is a structured therapy that helps your brain reprocess memories and experiences that got "stuck" — the ones that still carry a charge, that show up in your body before your mind even registers them, or that quietly drive beliefs like I'm not enough, I'm too much, or I don’t belong. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works directly with your nervous system, which means you begin to actually feel differently, not just intellectually understand how something might have shaped you.
EMDR might be a good fit if you:
Have a history of trauma (and no, it doesn’t have to be a specific traumatic event; it can be a lifetime of smaller, cumulative experiences)
Notice that certain beliefs about yourself feel stuck no matter how much insight you have
Feel like you understand your patterns intellectually but can't seem to change them
Carry stress or anxiety in your body in ways that are hard to explain or turn off
It's particularly powerful for the clients I work with who are navigating complex family dynamics, generational trauma, and the layered weight of being neurodivergent, first-gen, or queer in spaces that weren't built for them.
EMDR can be done fully virtually, and for many of my clients, being in their own space actually makes the process feel safer and more accessible. Want to learn more? My EMDR page goes into more depth on what sessions actually look like and what to expect.

Yes, in addition to weekly EMDR sessions, I offer EMDR intensives for clients who want to go deeper, faster.
An EMDR intensive is a 90-minute session compared to the 50-minute individual session format. The extended time allows us to move through the preparation, processing, and integration phases of EMDR more fully in a single sitting — without the stopping and starting that can sometimes come with a shorter session window. For some clients, this format creates more momentum and better matches their preferences.
Intensives can be a good option if you:
Are looking to do a deeper dive into a specific memory, belief, or experience
Feel ready to move through EMDR processing more quickly
Have already built a foundation in therapy and want to accelerate the work
Are navigating something time-sensitive and want more focused support
Intensives are available to both current and new clients and priced at $300 per 90-minute session. If you're not sure whether a weekly session or an intensive is the right starting point for you, we can talk through it during your free consultation.
-
Occasionally, yes, though working with teen clients (13+) isn't a primary focus of my practice. If you're a parent or guardian reaching out on behalf of a minor, I'd encourage you to schedule a consultation so we can talk through whether my approach and current availability would be a good fit for your family.
I also offer parenting support sessions for parents and caregivers who want to work through their own relationship with their parenting — whether that's navigating a teen’s neurodivergence, breaking generational patterns, or simply figuring out how to show up for your kids in a way that feels more intentional and grounded. Parenting support sessions are 45 minutes and priced at $250.
If you have questions about either, feel free to reach out directly. I'm always happy to help point you in the right direction, even if that means connecting you with someone who specializes more specifically in what you're looking for.
Logistics of Working Together
My therapy services are offered through a tiered, anti-oppressive pricing structure. Why? Because access to money, rest, and care isn’t equal.
We live within systems that shape how resources are distributed—impacted by race, gender, identity, ability, citizenship status, language, generational wealth, and proximity to power. A flat fee assumes we’re all starting from the same place. That’s simply not true.
This pricing structure is inspired by the Green Bottle Method (adapted from the work of Alexis J. Cunningfolk, with contributions by Britt Hawthorne, and was encountered through Rincón Curativo and Edith Caballero), which invites people to reflect on their access to financial resources in a more nuanced, honest way. Rather than requiring proof of income, I ask you to complete a brief 3-question reflection before our consult call. This helps you choose the tier that aligns with your current access to financial resources.
This model centers honesty, integrity, and collective care—allowing those with more access to help sustain the practice while expanding access for those navigating more barriers.
-
For those with financial stability, access to savings, and disposable income. Choosing this tier helps support the sustainability of this practice and allows me to offer lower-cost spaces to others in the community.
50 mins at $225 | 90 mins at $325
-
For those whose basic needs are consistently met, who have some financial flexibility, and can pay the standard rate without it creating significant stress or strain. This tier helps sustain the practice while keeping care more accessible across different levels of financial access.
50 mins at $200 | 90 mins $300
-
Reserved for those with limited financial access and/or navigating systemic barriers to wealth and healthcare. Sliding scale spots are intentionally limited and prioritized for those most impacted by systemic oppression—including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; trans, non-binary, and gender expansive folks; and disabled individuals.

TSW is a fully virtual practice, which means all sessions take place online. Many of my clients prefer the convenience and comfort of virtual sessions. Being in your own space means you can create an environment that feels safe for you — whether that's your couch, your home office, or your parked car between obligations.
Please note, you must be physically located in Florida at the time of your session per licensing laws.
I use a HIPAA-compliant video platform for sessions, so your privacy and confidentiality are protected. To participate in virtual sessions, you'll need:
A stable internet connection
A private space where you can speak freely
A computer, tablet, or smartphone
That’s it! The rest is up to you.
-
TSW is a fully virtual therapy practice based in Florida. I work with clients across the state — from Miami and South Florida to Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville, Jacksonville, and everywhere in between. As long as you're located in Florida at the time of our sessions, we can work together. At this time, I am not able to provide therapy services to people who do not reside in or are not physically present in Florida at the time of our sessions.
-
I am an out-of-network provider, which means I don't partner with insurance directly. However, depending on your insurance plan, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits, with many clients receiving anywhere from 30-80% back on the session cost from insurance.
To make this process easier, I've partnered with Thrizer, a platform that handles submitting superbills on your behalf — reducing the admin burden on your end. Thrizer also offers the option to pay only your co-pay at the time of session, rather than paying the full fee upfront and waiting for reimbursement once you've met your deductible.
Try out Thrizer's free benefits calculator to see what your cost per session would be.
-
A few ways to find out:
Try Thrizer's free benefits calculator — this is the quickest way to get a general sense of what your cost per session might look like. [Link to Thrizer calculator]
Review your plan's benefits documentation — look for "out-of-network mental health benefits" in your summary of benefits or explanation of coverage. (Most common on PPO plans.)
Call your insurance company directly — this is the most reliable way to confirm your specific coverage. When you call, it's helpful to ask: Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits? What is my out-of-network deductible, and have I met it? What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed after my deductible is met? Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per year?
I'm happy to help you understand more about how out-of-network benefits work during your free consultation as well and how I can help you with the reimbursement process.

Individual sessions are about 50 minutes long, couples and parenting sessions are 45 minutes, and EMDR intensives are 90 minutes. I typically recommend meeting weekly, especially at the start of our work together, to build momentum and consistency. That said, session frequency is something we'll revisit together over time based on your needs, goals, and life circumstances.
-
I require at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. I understand life happens, so each calendar year you'll have one complimentary cancellation to use as needed — no questions asked.
If you cancel with less than 48 hours notice, a $100 late cancellation fee will apply. If you miss a session without notifying me beforehand, the full session fee will be charged.
-
I typically hold sessions Monday through Thursday, 10am to 6pm. If you reach out over the weekend or on a Friday, please know those aren't considered business hours — I'll get back to you on the next business day.

The first step is to book your complimentary consultation! If it feels like a fit, we’ll set up our first appointment and go from there. If you have any questions before the consultation, you’re welcome to email me directly via my Contact page.
